Six windows, not one composite number

Powerplay

Overs 1 to 6 for batters and seamers

The powerplay is high-leverage for fantasy. Batters' strike rates matter more than averages; bowlers' wicket kinds (caught behind, caught at slip, LBW) tell a different story than economy alone.

Middle overs

Overs 7 to 15

The middle overs are where spinners earn most of their wicket-side points. Batters' strike rates here reveal acceleration or stagnation that the scorecard hides.

Death overs

Overs 16 to 20

A batter's finish rate and a bowler's back-six economy are the two numbers that move death-overs captain picks. We log them match-by-match.

Matchup splits

Against pace or against spin

A batter whose strike rate against spin is below 130 is a different captain pick on a slow turner. A batter who handles pace better is the captain on a flat deck.

Second innings

Chasing role

Chasing batters face different pressure than setting batters. The phase splits by innings caught are the difference between a routine 38 and a match-winning 38*.

Venue reads

Last six at this ground

Venue reads limit the sample to recent matches at the same ground. The captain matrix for a flat deck looks different than for a slow turner with the same player name.

Captain-pool rules of thumb

Five quick rules the desk applies to every captain pick

1 · Don't captain a player whose role is unclear

If the franchise has not publicly confirmed the batting position or the bowling phase, the player is not a captain. Captain picks with unsettled roles lose points more often than role-locked picks. The desk never puts an unsettled player on the captain shortlist.

2 · Captain your role-stability, not your ceiling

The captain's job is to deliver both a floor and a ceiling. A player whose floor is high but ceiling is moderate is a safer captain than one whose ceiling is high but floor is volatile. The desk reads floors first; ceilings come second. This is true at every contest level except large-field grand leagues with only a few entries.

3 · Reverse-captain on differential days

On grand-league days where the field is on a heavy favourite, consider captaining the second-favourite captain — the differential with the next-best role confidence. This inverts the safer captain logic for one match. The desk publishes a reverse-captain pool on the days where the call to reverse makes sense.

4 · Don't captain bowlers on flat decks

On flat decks, bowlers' wickets-per-over rate drops; their economy can hold but the wicket bonus evaporates. A spinner or a pace bowler who relies on grip or seam loses wicket count on flat decks. The captain matrix excludes bowlers on the flatter venues.

5 · On turning decks, captain spin allrounders

On turning decks, a spin-bowling allrounder can post 60+ fantasy points from one innings — bat points, bowl points, fielding catches. The captain matrix on turning decks privileges the allrounder pool. Always pair with a wrist-spinner if the deck reads dry.

6 · Read the captain's strike rate, not their average

A captain pick with a high average but a low strike rate is a low-leverage captain. The captain gets double points, which means the multiplier is on their actual run count, not their average-rank in the side. Always read strike rate first.

Reading a player card

How to use a player page on this desk

1 · Confirm the role

Every player page on this desk opens with the role summary — batting position, expected overs, expected impact-player slot. The role is the first thing to read; it drives every other matrix decision. If the role is unclear, you don't have a captain pick.

2 · Read the phase splits

The player card carries six phase windows: powerplay, middle, death, against pace, against spin, second innings. Read the windows in the order of the fixture's expected deck. A batter whose middle-overs strike rate is high is the captain on a turning deck; the same batter's death-overs strike rate drives their vice-captain logic on a flat deck.

3 · Read the venue split

The venue split on a player card is the last six matches at the upcoming ground. A player who has averaged 50+ in the last six at this ground is a Tier-1 captain; the same player off-form at this ground is Tier-3. The split is updated weekly on the desk dashboard.

4 · Read the workload tag

Every player card carries a workload tag — rest, rotation, normal, fresh. The tag is updated after every match and feeds the captain matrix. A bowler in rotation is a Tier-2 captain; a bowler fresh off a rest is a Tier-1 captain.

5 · Read the matchup tab

The matchup tab on a player card shows how the player has performed against the upcoming opposition across the last three head-to-heads. A batter who has averaged 60+ in the last three head-to-heads is a higher-leverage captain than one whose record is variable.

6 · Read the captain logic

The captain logic on the player card is the most specific section. It explains when this player is a Tier-1 captain, when they are a Tier-2 captain, and when they should be off the matrix entirely. Read the logic before you lock the pick.
