Toss · Confirmed XI

Once the toss and confirmed XI are public, we update the captain matrix and rewrite the recommended team. The post-toss read supersedes the pre-toss read.

Live · Mid-innings notes

Powerplay reads, middle-overs shift notes, strategic change flags (impact-player use, dew kicking in). Posted at each phase change with a verification tag.

What the live card tells you, and what it hides

Required rate

What's missing if dew kicks in

The required run rate on the live card is only correct while conditions are constant. The moment dew kicks in, the batting side's scoring options widen — slower balls grip less, yorkers slip out. The required rate metric on the card is recalibrated in real time on most platforms; the desk reads the recalibration and updates the captain matrix on the fly.

The opposite is true in the first innings. When the surface is at its driest and the ball is hardest, the run rate on the card is genuinely faster than the chase rate will be. We add a buffer of 6-8 runs when reading first-innings totals and a buffer of 4-6 runs when reading chase totals.

Last 6 balls

The window the captain matrix watches

The Last 6 balls window is the most timing-sensitive part of the card. A dot-ball sequence in the powerplay tells you more about the bowling side's grip than any aggregate economy number. A boundary sequence at the death tells you more about the batting side's intent than the strike rate.

We log the Last 6 sequence per over on the desk's internal tracker. The pattern across 4 overs is the strongest signal for phase-reveals on the part of the fielding captain, which is the missing input on most pre-toss frames.

Wickets in hand

Why it changes the captain matrix

Five wickets in hand at the end of the powerplay is a different game than three. The chase rate shifts, the role of the lower middle order widens, and the captain's options narrow. We tag the captain matrix to wickets-in-hand because a top-order anchor captain loses value when wickets fall early.

A wicket fall does not just change the run rate. It changes the role of every subsequent batter who walks in. Our per-batter phase tables become irrelevant at that moment; what matters is the roles still held by players on your team.

Bench pressure

The number no card shows

The cards don't show bench pressure — the depth of the batting and bowling lineups. An XI with one recognised batter at 8 and a bowler who can't bat is a much weaker chase proposition than an XI with a batting allrounder at 7 and a recognised keeper at 8. The cards show wickets in hand but not the quality of hands remaining.

Our desk reads the bench pressure by the team's average position-by-position batting order across the last four matches, plus the fielding captain's tactical tendencies on which end to hold a batting allrounder.

How the desk updates the captain matrix live

The captain matrix updates live on the desk dashboard throughout the match day. After the toss, we rewrite the captain shortlist; after the powerplay, we re-evaluate role share on the bowlers who have bowled; after the 14th over, we re-evaluate the differential reads based on the death-overs plan telegraphed by the fielding captain.

We update the matrix on this site as soon as the live read changes — typically every 4-6 overs. Subscribers and casual readers see the same desk read; we do not gate the captain work behind a paywall or an email list.
